I gotta say, it was a pretty good day back at the grindstone. Two hard workouts and a session of weights and I feel pretty awesome. Now HRH and I are relaxing before bedtime with our burrito bowls and this record I picked up this past Saturday at the The Sanctuary, ‘Scream the Blues‘ by Frankie & Jimmy.
First of all, I have to say it, the album cover is Simply the Tits.
I mean, it has all these happy dancing cats, dogs, turtles, rabbits, squirrels and whatnot all singing, dancing, playing their instruments and having a grand’ ol time, and for whatever reason, a cats butthole on the left hand side because, hey, why not?
This two piece plays stripped down bluesy folk tunes come straight from the garage. They released this album in 2013 and it’s nothing but fun to listen to. The first tune ‘Beautiful City‘ is a dirty blues song mainly utilizing a just kick drum and harmonica. It’s quick and to the point. It sets the tone for what’s to come. That’s when they fire into Chuck Berry’s ‘Let It Rock‘ which is a fast paced guitar rocker that’s basically a two piece Johnny B. Goode. From there it’s other very cool versions of other blues classics by Skip James, Charley Patton, Robert Johnson, Elizabeth Cotton, Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt, Leadbelly and Bo Diddley just to name a few.
Definitely a greasy, grimy listen and I enjoyed their show this past Saturday even if one of their dancing pogo groupie chicks apologized to me when she bumped by stool, saying:
“Sorry if we’re bothering you Mister, I know you’re just here for the curling”.
Suddenly I felt old.
Very, very old.
Regardless, Frankie and Jimmy were cool and I enjoyed the show and they were even nice enough to sign the album for HRH.
Oh, and I even picked up a bottle of their hot sauce although I’m likely going to crack into it at any time.
You can listen to the album HERE but I’d highly recommend getting out to the show for yourself.
Just don’t disturb us old geezers while we’re watching our curling, will ya?
