On Friday night we were lucky to have Uncle Lance and Aunt Amy all to ourselves. There was a great opportunity to show off the Sanctuary, eat some good tapas, drink too much craft beer and see the Strumbellas. Awesome, right? It was.
The follow up to this album ultimately won them a Juno last year but this is that debut album, ‘My Father and the Hunter‘ released in 2012.
Recorded at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Ontario, this is also no slouch of an album. It was nominated for a 2013 Juno Award in the Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year – Group category. Not too shabby, huh? It also contains the first song I ever heard by the band and which remains as my favorite, ‘The Sheriff‘, with which, they opened their set on Friday night. By the way, the song also has just about the best music video, like, ever providing you like the more arsty, creepy, wtf? kind of music videos over the usual mindless MTV variety containing lots of bootylicious bedunk-a-dunk’s bouncing all over the screen (seriously, check it out HERE).
‘Rhinestone‘ is also a fantastic tune which they also graced us with on friday night. In fact, the whole album is a beautifully arranged collection of tracks filled to the brim with delicious country harmonies, energetic stomping good fun, and singalong choruses to make you giggle with euphoric glee. At least that’s the way if was after one to many ‘Heavenweisse‘ wheat beers anyway.
As a interesting foot note, the moustachioed dude on the cover is singer Simon Ward’s father (as the title of the record might suggest). In fact, the album is a tribute to Ward’s poppa. And what has two thumbs and loves themselves a good concept album? This guy, that’s who. Throw in more of those good ‘ol slow burning Canadiana cookers for good measure and it’s a total thing of beauty and nowhere is that sentiment is the incredible second side one-two combo , ‘Left for Dead‘ and ‘Sailor’s Blues‘. Awesome.
Plus the record is a pretty green which is pretty cool. Green like my face the next morning after having been up performing my “Human Fountain of Vomit” routine in the bathroom later on.
