When The Greyboy Allstars first formed, nearly two decades ago (1994), they were nothing short of groundbreaking. Since then, they have influenced an entire generation of jam bands playing improvisational music in a largely instrumental funk format. This ‘Live’ album is still my favorite of the bunch.
I remember hearing this album on the way back from seeing Phish at the Pepsi Arena back in September, 2000. I thought back then that this must be the happiest, grooviest music on earth. I still do and that’s why I chose to listen to it again today on my oppressively hot and humid (28° – feels like 36°) 5.42k afternoon run.
Tunes like ‘Happy Friends’, ‘Jack Rabbit’ and ‘Toys R Us’ are great throw-backs to the old school funk/soul you used to hear from Maceo Parker and James Brown. In short, it’s practically impossible to run without a huge shit-eating grin on your face. What can I say? Da funk. ‘Tiz good fo da heat, dig? I can only imagine what the neighbors must have thought of this drippy, sweaty, largely spandex-clad goofball huffing and puffing along the road while grooving away to his ear buds.
